About Solana (SOL)
Solana (SOL) is a high-performance blockchain platform founded by Anatoly Yakovenko in 2017 and launched in 2020. It's engineered for speed and scalability, capable of processing over 65,000 transactions per second (TPS) with sub-second finality and extremely low fees — often fractions of a cent.
Solana's unique consensus mechanism combines Proof of History (PoH) with Proof of Stake (PoS). PoH creates a historical record proving events occurred at specific times, allowing the network to process transactions in parallel without constant cross-node communication — a breakthrough in blockchain architecture.
The Solana ecosystem has emerged as a powerhouse for NFTs, DeFi, and consumer applications. Platforms like Magic Eden, Jupiter Exchange, and Tensor have driven billions in trading volume. Solana's sub-penny transaction fees have made it particularly attractive for microtransaction-heavy applications and gaming.
After facing challenges in 2022 including multiple outages and exposure to the FTX collapse, Solana underwent a remarkable resurgence in 2023-2024. The network's reliability improved dramatically, and developer activity accelerated significantly.
SOL is used for transaction fees, staking to secure the network, and participating in governance. With a vibrant developer community and growing institutional interest, Solana has cemented itself as one of Ethereum's most serious competitors in the smart contract space.
