About XRP (XRP)
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source blockchain developed by Ripple Labs. Created in 2012, XRP was specifically designed to facilitate fast, low-cost international money transfers, positioning itself as an alternative to the traditional SWIFT banking system.
XRP transactions settle in 3-5 seconds and cost a fraction of a cent, making it one of the most practical cryptocurrencies for real-world payment applications. The XRP Ledger can process 1,500 transactions per second, providing enterprise-grade throughput for financial institutions.
Ripple's On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) product uses XRP as a bridge currency to enable cross-border payments without pre-funding accounts in destination currencies. This use case has attracted partnerships with hundreds of financial institutions and payment providers worldwide.
XRP faced a landmark legal battle when the SEC sued Ripple in 2020, alleging XRP was an unregistered security. A 2023 court ruling found that XRP sold on exchanges was not a security — a major legal victory that reinvigorated market confidence and sparked institutional interest.
With approximately 100 billion XRP in total supply and Ripple holding a significant portion in escrow, XRP's tokenomics involve monthly releases from escrow. XRP's focus on institutional adoption and banking-sector partnerships differentiates it sharply from other major cryptocurrencies.
